In 1978, Kerr became the Marketing Director for Benedict Communications in Del Mar, California. Benedict Communications was a diversified media company that owned a number of trade magazines, as well as provided outdoor and advertising agency services to companies throughout Southern California. Mr. Kerr headed up the magazine and outdoor divisions for three years. In 1981, these divisions were spun off by the company. Stephen Kerr joined the Licensing & Compliance division of the Walt Disney Company, 1981 – 1989, as Vice-President Licensing, Southeast Asia. His work entailed working with Disney publishing, theme parks and motion picture group; coordinating marketing with licensees around the world to ensure that quality control was maintained and all creative work complied with Walt Disney standards. Mr. Kerr traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America for Disney, working hand in hand with Disney’s many licensees. While working at Disney, Mr. Kerr entered into a partnership with Raymond Chao in Hong Kong, and began packaging adult and children’s trade books and representing Paramount Printing in the United States. During this period this partnership grew from one employee and $600,000 in sales to 17 employees and over $16 million in sales. Mr. Kerr managed all U.S. marketing operations, hired print sales personnel and handled thousands of quotes on printing jobs. In 1988, Mr. Chao sold his interest in the Hong Kong printing business which necessitated that Mr. Kerr sell his interest as well.
